VOLKAO – The French innovation that transforms tap water into pure spring water
As concerns over the quality of drinking water continue to grow, with the frequent presence of pesticide residues, nitrates, pharmaceuticals, and microplastics in distribution networks, a French innovation called Volkao offers an original and sustainable solution.
This new filtration system, designed from natural materials and entirely manufactured in France, stands out for its efficiency, its absence of disposable plastic, and its artisanal approach. It aims to provide a reliable alternative to bottled water, whose massive consumption contributes to plastic pollution. By combining sanitary requirements, environmental responsibility, and manufacturing quality, Volkao emerges as a relevant solution to today’s challenges related to tap water. The product will be available in stores starting in November.
A technology inspired by nature and geology
Volkao draws its inspiration from the natural processes of water purification. In nature, spring water passes through successive layers of soil, sand, and rock that trap impurities. The Volkao system replicates this principle by combining several carefully selected natural materials for their filtering properties. Volcanic rock, for example, plays an essential role in biological purification. As for kaolin clay, it is fired at high temperatures to form a porous ceramic capable of capturing heavy metals. This set of materials—grey clay, wood sawdust, activated carbon, and volcanic rock—works in synergy. Each element has a specific function: clay absorbs impurities, sawdust, released during firing, creates ideal porosity, activated carbon traps micropollutants and enhances taste, while volcanic rock acts as a powerful natural filter. This process achieves an exceptional level of filtration: laboratory tests show a 99.9% elimination of pharmaceutical residues, pesticides, endocrine disruptors, heavy metals such as lead and copper, as well as pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli.
An artisanal and 100% French production
One of Volkao’s greatest strengths lies in its commitment to the local economy and craftsmanship. Every stage of production takes place in France, following a short and transparent supply chain. The blend of clay, sawdust, and minerals is prepared in Lot-et-Garonne. This mixture is then transformed in Aude, where it is combined with demineralized water and colloidal silver, before being pressed, dried, and fired at 950 °C to become the filtering pot. The brass components, including the tap and handle, are manufactured in the Somme, a historic region of French faucet making. This choice is not only symbolic: brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has natural antibacterial properties, ensuring optimal hygiene even at the system’s extremities. The solid wood base is crafted in Puy-de-Dôme, then hand-varnished in Vienne. Finally, the entire unit is assembled and packaged in Marseille, where Volkao’s headquarters are located.
A refined design, balancing elegance and functionality
Volkao stands out as an aesthetic object. Its design was conceived as a tribute to nature and artisanal know-how. The tripod base ensures stability while making it easier to fill a glass. Available in birch or okoumé wood, it harmonizes with a variety of interiors. The faucet, with its fluid lines, evokes both a drop of water and the letter “V” of Volkao. The tank, made of high-quality enamelled steel—a material originating from Turkey and renowned for its durability—adds a touch of modernity and simplicity. This non-porous material does not transfer any substance to the water and retains its shine over time.
